How Our Sheet Break Detectors Work: Color, Contrast & Texture
A break detector has to distinguish “sheet present” from “sheet gone” across grade changes, coating changes and steam. Monarch sensors memorise the color, contrast and texture of the running web and measure all three simultaneously, rather than relying on a single reflectance threshold. That is what allows close-color-combination detection and long-range mounting.
ONE-9010 Sheet Break Detection System
The ONE-9010 is an LED light sensor using proprietary technology to measure color, contrast and texture of the moving web at the same time. It detects breaks at distances of up to 15 feet, so sensors mount out of harm’s way and away from collateral damage from the web. This is the one sensor for all locations and applications on the machine: open draw, sheet on cylinder, sheet on felt, tight spaces and harsh environments.
One-touch calibration simplifies setup, a patented air purge keeps the optics clean, and performance monitoring plus a maintenance alarm give full visibility of sensor activity. The ONE-9010 operates to a maximum 400°F (204°C) and 100% humidity, consumes 1 CFM (28.3 LPM) of air, runs on 24 VDC, and is housed in hard-coat anodised aluminium. Made in USA.
EXT-9003 External Sheet Break Detection
The EXT-9003 is a laser sensor for open draw locations that handles multiple color changes on the fly. A stainless steel body, hard-coat anodised nose cone, high-temperature cable and patented air purge let it work in harsh environments, with a mounting distance of up to 5 feet. It has hundreds of installations worldwide.
The Smart-Box controller provides one-touch calibration, temperature monitoring and a record of the time of the last break, with an HMI touchscreen for quick sensor calibration and information.
Ply Break Detection — Multi-Ply Web Sensing
The PBD Ply Break Detection System identifies a break or fold-over in any ply of a multi-ply tissue web. The sensor views one web surface on a tissue rewinder or converting machine and automatically memorises the web’s characteristics at each roll change, accounting for grade changes and color shifts. Any sudden change is interpreted as a break in one or more plies.
Specifications: operating temperature 400°F, operating humidity 99% RH, sensing range 2-7 inches at right angle on white tissue, response time 1 millisecond with a 400ms adjustable on-delay, air consumption 1 CFM at 40 psi per sensor, 24 VDC at 75 mA, supplied with 30 ft (10m) fibre optic cable. A continuous air purge keeps the optics clean, it works on any color of web, and quick-disconnect air and electrical connections simplify installation.
On-Demand Data, DCS Integration & Remote Monitoring
All Monarch sheet break detection systems provide on-demand data output compatible with DCS and other external control systems. Sensor signals from the Ply Break Detection System can also be integrated with a Monarch Break Marking System to mark breaks and fold-overs automatically as they are detected, closing the loop between detection and downstream corrective action.
